Diva Challenge #317, Made by Joey Challenge #166 & a few Travelling Tangles

Real Life String or Tangle a Photo

Oh man! I love how this came out because it totally happened on the fly. I was just gathering my tools to head down to the cafe last night when I got the ping that the Diva's stream had started. As luck would have it, the video was coming in clearly so I grabbed a beer and stayed put. Good thing, once I realized I was going to need more than a pen and a tile. After a quick scramble, I had everything I needed within an arms reach of my drawing table: a recently arrived Cheese Culture magazine, scissors, a rejected tile and a glue stick. This is a super cool way to recycle your rejects.

I have a feeling I'm going to be spending a good part of my next days off pouring over magazines for more  inspiration like this. Laura mentioned that she would start putting images in her journal to tangle around. Methinks I will too;-) Speaking of journals...
Whenever I get a new one, the first thing I do is randomly paint. It immediately takes the pressure off to create "perfection". My current journal started with this page months ago, I had a day off on Sunday and holed up in my apartment (hiding out from the annual Bay-to-Breakers foot race that clogs the city and turns my quiet little neighborhood into Crazytown) with the cat, a homemade pizza and a stack of library videos. I love BBC/PBS murder mysteries and I'm currently on season 12 of Midsomer Murders. Good times.

Early Sunday morning after a lengthy stare-down, I began with tiny Tipples around the outside of the paint, then I saw leaves and using a colored pencil drew some in across the top.

I can't remember what that flower pattern is called, I was inspired by this beauty from Margaret Bremners blog.


This is another page I set up a couple of weeks ago using re-used and used again wadded up strips of colored art tissue. It's just incredible how much use you can get out a package of tissue.

Wow. It's hard to believe that this series is almost over. 5 more to go and  my Bijou collection is done. I forgot how much I love Undling. It's so relaxing to draw and the shading really brings it to life. I must make sure to get it into more pieces a.s.a.p.

    Your tiles are just beautiful Michele, I'm always impressed by them. There is a lot of sun where I'm sitting on my tab and when I got to Aimee's picture I couldn't make it out and wondered what ever has she got on her face??? It kind of looked like a monkey face surrounded by fur! Moving further into the house I could finally see she was yawning! Lmao

    That leafy journal page is stunning. Wow!

    And well done on encouraging so much colour from your tissue - I have the right stuff but it just won't bleed onto my tiles - too much or too little water maybe?

      Thanks Jem! I saturate the paper, lay down the strips of tissue and then saturate the tissue with a large-ish brush loaded with water applying pressure here and there. So I guess try more water?

    These are just plain cool, Michele. I shall try the journal idea! I'm having a joint replacement in my thumb next week and in a cast for 8 weeks. I'll have my good hand, thank goodness, but I can't juggle too many arty things. A journal sounds like the perfect idea. And Aimee is beautiful. I have the boy version of her--Finky.

      Thanks Denise! I'm a bit of a You Tube junkie and I saw a video a long time ago about starting a new journal. Start on a random page and "mess it up!"😉

    What can I say other than a marvelous post with stunning tiles and a cracking cat. In all my life I would never dare to start a journal the way you do. Why? Because it would never, ever, ever, in a million years ever turn out so beautiful yours did.
    Blooming Butter is the tangle name.

      Many thanks Susie! I used to be intimidated by new journals. The painting is really a fun way to start. I've done circles, blotting colors in with a small sponge, stripes...whatever. I never know when the inspiration will hit to start tangling on it😉

    Me too, am inspired by Margaret's beautiful art but you did a great job as well. I love everything you create, always using fantastic colours and well drawn tangles. I admire you because you always have such interesting posts with many works, every week again. I have to take a step back (arthrosiscomplaints) but, as you I also like to Mitsummer Murders and the Scandinaviaon thrillers are very good. And of course: summertime, lots of time to walk and swimm.

    Love the cheesy tile and the use of colour too. I too have started a journal, although I have doubts about my sticking power. We'll see. Like you, i love to see Margaret Bremner's work but I love the way you have used it as a springboard and made the piece your own your own.

    I love your IPA tile! So beautiful and rich looking! Yummy colours! I so love Aimee's yawn..... I just want to cuddle up with her and sleep! I know how she feels...still being tired after a nap! Lovely travelling Tangles. :)

      Thanks Deanne! Aimee's a great cuddler but she doesn't sit still for long. She loves that spot on the bay window next to my table, when she's not plopping herself down on top of the sketchbook when I'm trying to draw. LOL.

    Your photo for the Diva Challenge was so well incorporated I had a difficult time finding it! Hahaha. Love how it turned out. I also really like the found poetry tangle piece. Need to research that now.

    I hearby crown thee the Diva of Watercolor Washes. I continue to drool, week after week. These journal pages are gorgeous. Your Diva tile had me scratching my head, too, as I searched for the photo. Oops! Hope I didn't wake Aimee!

      Thanks Jennifer! I unintentionally went a bit rogue on this challenge. I was watching Laura's stream and she used the term "real life string" which set me off to find part of a picture I liked rather than something to tangle around;-)
