Diva Challenge #347
String Theory: Traced Objects
lipstick, jar lid, USB stick and an ink bottle
I love this kind of string challenge. I managed to catch Laura's YouTube video on Sunday night so I got a jump start and set up the string. The next morning I grabbed a handful of tools and headed down to the cafe for a little drawing session.
I went back-to-basics on this one. Black ink, white tile, conjuring up my top 20 faves in my head and letting the zen take me on little journey. I started off by thinking about where I might want to leave white space and at the very last minute, decided to add a border. I used a fountain pen so the blacker areas aren't so solid, but I really love how this came out.
duo tangle: Huggins & Phicops
Trainwreck Sketchbook
In my attempt to make friends with Phicops last week, I played a little bit with it here in my trainwreck sketchbook. I had set up the watercolor backgrounds a while back and the colors here seemed a good fit for some organic exploration. I've been using a Pentel Stylo pen and Staedler Triplus Fineliners in this book as the watercolor grounds were done with a cheap Daiso set of tube paints. They're chalky and will clog up Microns and fountain pens. I actually love the muted colors they produce when mixed. Both pens are water soluble so I dripped water on the linework and let it do its thing. I love that effect. I don't know if this is finished yet. I pondered doing some highlight and it just didn't seem right.

I Love, love, LOVE this Diva tile. It has such a great composition, I keep looking at it. I also love Aimee in the bos :-)

DeleteThank you Annemarie! That was a really fun tile to make;-)
DeleteYour DIVA tile is wonderful, Michele! The frames and the empty places are perfect placed between the classical patterns. I also like your sketchbook drawings, and, of course, Aimee in the box.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Margarete! I love the back-to-basics approach and need to do it more;-) I have two boxes like that, one by the window and one on my table. 90% of the time she's in one or the other;-)
DeleteAbout 30 years ago, we had a cat like your Aimee. She also loved boxes. Once, I wanted to wrap a Christmas present for my mother and I barely managed to get the gift in the box and not the cat.
DeleteI really like your Diva tile - a great reminder to think about those spaces - just as important what you lay down in ink.
ReplyDeleteI can see why you don't know whether to stop with your Phicops / Huggins piece. I think muted is good. Maybe think about muted highlights / shading. White pencil / chalk inside of gel? Easier said than done of course. That terror of not wanting to take something in the wrong direction.
Thanks Jem! It was nice to take a simple zen approach this week after last week's hesitation with Phicops. Those more challenging challenges are the ones that bring me the most satisfaction though. I did have fun with that Phicops page and the beauty of the trainwreck journal is that there's no failure in trying. I do so enjoy the water effect and I'm fairly certain I'll go back and explore some highlight/shadow at some point;-)
DeleteI am always surprised by your lovely coloured work but this week, my absolute favorite is your Diva tile, just black/white but drawn so beautiful in a wonderful compositon. I love the contrasts, the shading and the combination of tangles. Aimee, on the contrary is at her best in the coloured way!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Ria! I'm glad I added the border because I like to jump it sometimes. purrrrs from Aimee;-)
DeleteI like your diva tile especially the combination of patterns and areas you leaved white and only made shadows on it! Great tile :-)
ReplyDeleteYour Alpaca is amazing!!!
thanks so much Sandra!
DeleteI love your tiles :-))
ReplyDeletethank you Gudrun! I love yours too. I don't have a flickr account so I can't comment there but I just love the paint brushes;-)
DeleteGreat diva tile and I love the train wreck journal pages! The one with Huggins and Phicops is especially lovely.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Kate!
DeleteThe object string is really beautiful! What a great tile!
ReplyDeleteAnd your XXL Phicops is stunning!
Thank you Simone😉
DeleteMichelle, I love all of these - the duo Phicops and Huggins in your trainwreck journal are amazing. I love the thought of actually using the pens that are not permanent and letting the water work on them. Your work is an inspiration.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Pat😍
Deletemmm, that phicops/huggins duo is AMAZING! I love the rough edges, the wicking water colors, the shapes, the color scheme. It is wonderful! but all of them are. Good work
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Heidi 😉 I really did enjoy that Phicops exploration.
DeleteYour "train wreck" is so not a wreck!!!! Both examples are spectacular. I especially love the watery Phicops and Huggins and its beautiful color palette. I don't think I would add highlights, for fear of losing the underwater effect. (BTW, this reminds me of "The Shape of Water" in its muted aquatic tones. Loved that movie.)
ReplyDeleteThank you Jennifer😉 the story behind calling it The Trainwreck Journal is it was my first and very messy attempt at making a hand bound book. It's where I'm fearless and the most playful. I love it.
ReplyDeleteLove your journalwork! It is so inspiring, I think I must work on mine too! Your stringthing for the Diva is so creative! Give my hugs to your wonderful cat!!!
